Energy efficiency for more sustainable healthcare through collaboration Revvity and enerGQ
It's a simple but radical truth: the most sustainable energy is the energy you don't use. In Groningen, two innovative companies, Revvity and enerGQ, are redefining this principle within a sector rarely associated with energy efficiency; healthcare. This collaboration has not only dramatically reduced energy costs, but also paved the way for a future where sustainability and operational excellence go hand in hand.
Healthcare supplier
Revvity, a leading U.S. life sciences company, specializes in supporting laboratories worldwide with technology and supplies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it played a key role in genetic research, and demand for their products has skyrocketed since then. That said, Revvity wanted to work from its ISO certification to reduce its energy consumption: clean rooms, cold rooms and heat stores - essential to their processes - consume huge amounts of power. But they changed that.
A solution that starts with insight
Saving energy doesn't start with solar panels or batteries. It starts with understanding where your energy is going. This is where enerGQ comes in. By combining real-time monitoring with machine learning, enerGQ helps companies analyze their energy use down to the detail level.
Rob Burghard, general manager of enerGQ, explains it simply: "The energy you don't use, you don't have to generate." This insight is what Revvity needed to undergo a rigorous transformation. It started with data: measuring, monitoring and revealing the hidden inefficiencies. And that led to action.
Smart technology, measurable impact
Previously, Revvity's systems ran continuously, whether needed or not. But with enerGQ's help, innovative solutions were introduced, such as sensor-controlled roller doors that open and close faster and smart solutions that ensure the cleanrooms are not constantly on. The result? Less heat loss, lower cooling costs and thus a significant reduction in energy consumption - from one million kWh per year to just 568,000 kWh.
These savings go beyond costs. They show that sustainability does not have to mean concessions. On the contrary, it creates room for growth. "Our production has increased, while our energy consumption has decreased," says Jochem Bruggeman, director of operations at Revvity.
The broader impact: A blueprint for the future
What Revvity and enerGQ are doing goes beyond one company or sector. It is a demonstration of what is possible when companies use data and technology to address waste. And the benefits extend: lower energy costs, reduced carbon emissions, and a solution to the growing problem of grid congestion.
It is also an example that can inspire others. In a world where sustainability is often seen as a luxury, this collaboration shows that it is a strategic necessity - and offers a competitive advantage.
What can we learn from this?
The collaboration between Revvity and enerGQ is not magic; it is a model. It shows that real progress begins with a fundamental shift in thinking: not just about how much we produce, but how efficiently we do so.
And perhaps that is the most important lesson for companies in the Northern Netherlands and beyond: innovation does not start with grand ideas, but with smart choices.
